A dermatologistʼs practice was repeatedly attended by a 34-year-old woman suffering from recurrent dermatitis. As her medical history showed, she had been using skin care cosmetics very actively since her youth. Epicutal tests showed that the patient had an allergy to parabens, commonly used as preservatives. Although parabens are non-toxic for healthy individuals, they can cause dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Moreover, oversensitivity to parabens overlapped with allergies to other compounds of paraaminobenzoic acid derivatives. The dermatologist recommended the patient use of the Jarisch solution and the lubricating ointment Unguentum Leniens. Without the use of parabens, the preparations had a slightly shorter expiry date, but the patient used them up in a short period of time and her skin calmed after regular care.
